Production: Depth of Field Adapters
More and more, video crews have started to use different camera filters, lenses and attachments to give their finished program a certain look. One of the more popular devices as of late is called a depth of field adapter. This adapter enables the camera operator to use 35mm prime film lenses on any type of video camera. It attaches to the front of the camera and houses a small rotating piece of ground glass. These adapters help you to control what subject matter is the main focus in a particular scene.
Why is a shallow depth of field sought after? Not only does it produce a more “film like” image but it also provides the director of photography with a tool to direct the viewer’s attention to a specific part of the frame. It helps them to visually tell the audience what is the most important part of the scene by keeping it in the sharpest focus. The next time you are watching a movie, watch and see how sharp and in focus the actor talking is compared to their foreground or background. Your eye naturally wants to pay attention to the actor and not the other blurry objects in the frame. Now translate that to your specific product on screen; sharp, shiny and the center of attention. Just think of the possibilities! Think about how your message and your story can be enhanced by this element. Beautiful High Definition footage combined with a depth of field adapter, produces a truly award winning combination.
