Market Research – internet “Know How”

We hear the word research and often think of a scientific laboratory – full of boiling beakers and a mouse chasing a piece of cheese – or a student hidden in the depths of a library, gathering information to support a particular paper or thesis.  In any event, research is definitely hard work and the goal is to gain as much information as you can, analyze it, and then test your theories and conclusions in the real world. That’s my Uncle Joe…

So at Monday’s staff meeting, your company decides they want to put some video content on their website AND create a YouTube channel. They put you in charge because “you got great video at the company picnic last year.”  You proudly smile and think to yourself that’s great news. Right? Read the rest of this entry →

If You Build It, They Will Come

Social Media…It’s All Changing Now…

When I was still in college (sigh…), wireless laptops were the professors biggest competition in the classroom.  Having wireless in classrooms was a big thing ~ even bigger when professors allowed you to bring your own laptop to “take notes” but it also gave everyone around you free reign to see what you were looking at. (Note taking, 100% of the time, I swear!!!) Majority of the time, most students had one popular social networking site always up – Facebook.  Back then (2-3 years ago), Facebook was still predominantly for college and high school kids.  It had started to grow among recent graduates but it definitely had not escalated to parents, grandparents or professors…yet.  As these students graduated and went off into the working world, they often found social media sites blocked by their employers.  How dare they!?!? Online Learning: How Social Media Could Have Improved My Education

On August 4, 2010 I will post my last participation comments at Baker College Online as an undergraduate student in marketing. I’m what colleges and universities would refer to as a “non-traditional” student – I’m 31, a working professional and don’t have the flexibility to attend class on campus (nor would I want to attend on campus). I live at least 20 minutes from the nearest community college campus and while that might not seem like a long commute, see how long it takes during a Lake Michigan lake-effect snowstorm! I also didn’t really want to dedicate the necessary resources to make it to a “real” classroom. On the flip side, I definitely felt that I missed out on enriching in-person, real-time discussion and interactions. To be honest, statistics was not an easy class to learn solo!

Sports Marketing – Beyond the Madness of March

In a few days “March Madness” begins and fans can’t help but be reminded of “bubble teams, “seeding” and “bracket busters.”  Along with the euphoria that is generated by die-hard basketball fans, there are numerous “casual fans” who simply participate in the three-week event by submitting their best guesses – in bracket form – of the winner of the national championship.  As I ponder my own choices for this year’s Final Four, I am also thinking about how this event – and sports in general – have changed in terms of marketing.

“Coach’s” Game Winning Strategy

It never ceases to amaze me how much brand loyalty influences our daily purchases.  When we go to the store to buy a product, we stroll down the aisle and pull the items right off the shelf.  Before reaching the aisle and even perhaps the store, we usually already know what product and brand we will be picking up without putting much thought into it. How did we get to this point? Think about it. I inherited several of my mother’s brand loyalty habits. My mom purchased only certain brands and once I was old enough to buy my own products, I followed in the same pattern without ever thinking about it. Growing up, my family always used Crest toothpaste. And now, it’s the only brand I buy.  I am sure I am not the only one impacted by a family member’s purchases. Read the rest of this entry →

The Not-So-Secret Marketing Innovation You Can Implement Now

Innovation-III

When most of us think of marketing, we think of a department in the company that creates ads, direct mail, commercials, etc. But marketing is so much more than just a few “creative” people sitting around writing tag lines.
