Graphics in Motion

Awhile ago I wrote a Post-Production article about The Art of Motion Graphics. In it I discussed the attention grabbing power of animated graphics in video. Isn’t it time then, for a little visual aid? Recently I put together a simple motion graphics reel for a potential PentaVision client who wanted to see what I was capable of. I present that to you here (it’s important to note that several of these clips come from personal projects, past employers and other ghosts from the past):

Extra special thanks to Jonn Swihart for lending us an original music track to cut this to.

Production: Lighting – Quality or Quantity?

Lighting

Quality or quantity. You’ve heard these words used to describe plenty of things; work, products, food and even people. In the world of digital media production, they are often used to describe one very important element; light. Yes, light. Brightness. Radiance.  Illumination. Without quantity, it becomes a project for radio. Without quality, it becomes an average, ordinary, just like everybody else looking video.

Tell Me a Story…

Storytelling1

I, like most people, enjoy a great movie.  The ones that I find most memorable are the ones that tell a great story, like:

“Little Miss Sunshine”

Innovate I: What Does Innovation Look Like?

innovation light bulb

If you could pick one company or product that, in your mind, defined innovation, who or what would it be? I asked myself that same question after I was approached by my coworker Michael Rupchock, our video and graphics editor to co-write a blog on innovation. It’s interesting that he chose this topic, because this is something I’ve been discussing in one of the groups I belong to on LinkedIn – as well as an article in the November 2009 issue of Entrepreneur.

Pre-Production: Talented Talent?

It’s the bottom of the 9th, two outs and bases loaded.  You’ve done everything you needed to do to put your team in a position to win the game.  The manager comes out, raises an arm to signal for the closer to come in and seal the deal.  Game over.  That call made the difference in that game.  This scenario happens a lot in baseball to varying degrees and it also can happen with your next video.  Read the rest of this entry →

Production: Some Sound Advice

When working on a video project, the sound or audio portion of the project often becomes a “stepchild” and gets neglected.  What you need to realize is that audio is 50% of your final product.  Why spend extra money on an awesome location with professional on-camera talent, and then record the audio with a cheap microphone on the camera?  Recording quality audio in the field is just as important as making sure your video looks spectacular. Post Production: Track Stackin’: Electric Boogaloo

Have you ever been to a movie theater where the projectionist didn’t have the sound up loud enough?

Or have you ever tried to watch a movie that you really wanted to see with a talkative group of friends?

What about those times when you’ve sat in an airport terminal watching some news show on a television that was muted?

It can be pretty hard to keep the attention of a viewer when your video has audio problems. When audio is cut correctly in post production, no one notices. When audio is incorrectly cut, no one will notice anything else. Read the rest of this entry →
